Remembering Author, Friend and FDNY Icon Dennis Smith
Hearts were heavy as word spread through the fire community about the passing of author, friend and Fire Department of New York City (FDNY) icon and firefighter, Dennis Smith.
Dennis helped to spread the word when we launched our Discovering Heroes® series, aiding in our efforts to educate kids about 9/11 and everyday heroes. In a letter from the Desk of Dennis Smith he wrote, “Today’s kids, even my own grandchildren, are growing up knowing little or nothing about 9/11. I believe it’s a necessity in America to understand 9/11 and firefighters’ role in it. That’s why I want to introduce you to Author Kristie Kiernan Bouryal and the wonderful books she wrote.”
Dennis encouraged not only awareness but action when he reached out to the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the International Association of Firefighters, the F.O.O.L.S. International President, the Firefighters Association for the State of New York, the New Jersey State Firemen’s Association, the Pennsylvania State Firefighter’s Association and many more organizations and individuals.
We are forever in Dennis’ debt and he is forever in our hearts. Heaven gained a hero, a legend and a one-of-a-kind, worldly gentleman with a giant heart. Rest in Peace and thank you, friend.
